MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF TEACHING. STILL LEARNING.
I began my Iyengar Yoga teacher training in 2002, completing three years of training before gaining my Level 1 certification. I’ve continued studying and training in the Iyengar method ever since and currently hold Level 2 certification.
Before teaching yoga, I trained for two years in neuromuscular therapy and spent seven years working hands-on in clinical and corporate settings. That background still strongly influences the way I teach — particularly how I look at anatomy, injury, movement and the differences between individual bodies.
I opened my first yoga studio in Auckland in 2008, before moving to Whitianga in 2017 and establishing Yoga Whitianga.
After more than two decades of teaching, what continues to interest me most is that no two bodies are the same. Age, injury, strength, mobility, experience and simply how we arrive on the day all affect how we practise.
Iyengar Yoga gives us the tools to work with those differences. Props, precise instruction and progressive teaching allow the practice to adapt to the person rather than expecting the person to fit the pose.
That’s the way I teach.
I also believe yoga doesn't exist in isolation. I've strength trained in Olympic weightlifting and practised CrossFit for many years, and I value being strong as much as being mobile. That experience has given me another perspective on load, recovery, injury and what it means to maintain a capable body as we get older.
